Why Clear is Better: The Truth About Red Dye Nectar

Many people think hummingbird nectar should be red because the birds love red flowers. However, adding red dye to your nectar is not only unnecessary—it can be harmful.

The "Red" is Already on the Feeder

Hummingbirds are attracted to the color red, but they look for the color of the feeder, not the liquid inside. Most high-quality feeders, like yours, already have red flowers or bases. Adding dye to the water is redundant.

Dyes Can Be Toxic

The red dyes used in many store-bought nectars (like Red No. 40) are chemicals that hummingbirds' tiny organs were never meant to process. Because these birds have such high metabolisms and drink more than their body weight daily, even small amounts of chemicals can build up quickly.
